What type is fire-resistant gypsum?

Fire-resistant gypsum is classified as Type X. This type of gypsum board has special additives that improve its fire-resistance capabilities, allowing it to withstand exposure to fire for longer periods compared to standard gypsum board. Typically, Type X boards contain reinforced fibers and other materials designed to delay the spread of flames and reduce heat transfer, with a fire-resistance rating of at least one hour depending on the application and design of the assembly in which it is used. This makes it particularly suitable for use in walls and ceilings where a higher level of fire safety is required, such as in commercial buildings and certain residential applications.

In contrast, Type C gypsum board may offer even greater fire resistance due to increased fiberglass content and is typically designed to maintain structural integrity longer than Type X; however, it is not as commonly referred to as the standard for fire-resistant gypsum compared to Type X. Types 3 and D are not standard classifications associated with fire-resistant properties in gypsum board, and therefore do not apply in this context.
